Taken in the Terrace House, Ephesus, Turkey, this is a restored marble wall panel, from the large main dining room, thought to have been constructed in the 1st century BC. The symmetry of the pattern comes from the mirroring of slices taken from a single block of marble, an effect that is repeated all the way around the walls of the room but which is also echoed in the organic imagery familiar to us in MRI scans and audio wave forms some two thousand years later.
